What makes a person interesting?

Listen to a group of teens having a conversation and you’re almost certain to notice that there’s one person in the group who always feels that whatever they have to say – on any subject – deserves special attention. And that’s why they say it with such authority and so loudly.

I’ve always wondered why this self-selected authority on everything feels so entitled to attention.

And then in college I figured it out.

When you’re young and your head is pretty much cluttered with opinions based only on the facts you’ve already learned or personally experienced, you assume that your opinions are just as good, maybe even better , than everyone else’s. But something special happens when you start taking your college courses. There are basic subjects required. And even if it isn’t a subject you’re initially interested in, you still walk away from every course with an expanded base of knowledge and opinions based on real facts.

The more classes you take the more background, facts and knowledge you gain, until you have acquired a pretty diverse base of knowledge on which to base your opinions.

You’ve become more interesting to other people because you really are more Interesting.

On the other hand when you stop your education before attending college you’re forever left with opinions based on your limited interests. Of course, everyone who lives a long time gains more experience and reading certainly helps expand your knowledge, but in my opinion there’s still a difference. This is why some people continue to act the way they did when they were in high school. And why one of my most blissful ‘aha’ moments in college was when I realized  that just by attending college I had become a more interesting person. And I didn’t need to talk loudly or interrupt people to prove it.
